Dietetic Internship |
|
Welcome to the Mount Carmel College of Nursing Dietetic Internship! Thank you for your interest in our program!
The Dietetic Internship is a nine-month program that provides the requisite pre-professional practice needed to qualify for the Dietetic Registration Examination for Dietitians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. In order to apply for a license to practice dietetics, a student must achieve a passing score on this examination.
Accreditation Status
Our program has been granted continuing accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation fro the Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Il. 60606-6995. (Phone- 312-899-0040, ext. 5400).
Enrollment is limited to eight students. Applicants admitted to the internship must have completed and received a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university didactic program. The internship year 2007-2008 marked our 15th year of educating future dietitians. As of June 2007, 110 individuals have successfully graduated from the program. Philosophy
The philosophy of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing Dietetic Internship is based on the values espoused by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Those values include respect for the worth, dignity and well being of all individuals, recognition of the wholeness of individuals, sanctity of life, promotion of health and the necessity for community responsibility.
Mission of the Dietetic Internship
The mission of the DI-MCCN is to operate with those values as indicated in the philosophy, in mind, as we provide dietetic interns with high quality learning experiences in an environment that encourages investigation, self-direction, open mindedness, and respect for the uniqueness of every individual.
Program Goals
The dietetic internship graduate will be prepared to practice as a competent entry level, generalist dietitian. Competent, in this sense, is defined as having the capability to: successfully practice in a dietetics related job; maintain currency in trends and technology; perform ethically and professionally; communicate effectively within diverse populations; and meet the nutrition needs of those that are served whether in clinical, management, education or community settings.
The dietetic internship graduate will maintain a commitment to life-long learning.
To substantiate the internship goals the expected program outcomes are that:
- The intern will complete the internship, and upon conclusion of the program, will receive a verification of completion certificate.
- The graduate will pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians and become a registered and licensed (if applicable) dietitian.
- The graduate will work successfully in a dietetics related field and engage in the pursuit of continued learning.
Expected intern learning outcomes are that:
- The intern will operate professionally,

Additional Information
The dietetic interns have access to the college facilities, as do the nursing students, including use of the library, computer labs, exercise room and recreation room. Resident housing is also available.
Intern Health Services – MCCN maintains a health program for students, coordinated by the Student Health Nurse who is available throughout the year. Services provided include health guidance, treatment of minor illness not requiring hospitalization and a yearly tuberculin skin test. Interns are responsible for all costs incurred for diagnostic tests and emergency care. Attaining and maintaining health insurance is the responsibility of each student. The College does not offer health insurance coverage.
Annual TB skin testing is required. This test is given through the student health office during orientation week. A record of MMR and chicken pox immunizations is also required. Hepatitis B and meningitis vaccinations are recommended or a waiver must be signed.
Intern Employment – Interns are encouraged to give serious consideration to the number of hours committed to employment and to scheduling work hours that do not conflict with the intern’s rotations and achievement of goals. Certain rotations require evening or early morning assignments; all rotations have priority over outside employment responsibility during internships.
Student Newsletter – Our student newsletter, “The Carmel Rapper,” publishes information of interest to MCCN students, faculty, staff and interns. Interns contribute information regarding nutrition and internship experiences to the paper.
Counseling – Mental health counseling is available to interns on a referral or voluntary basis. This counseling includes crisis and personal counseling, stress reduction techniques and referrals to appropriate resources. Counseling is available to all interns and there is no charge for this service for up to five visits (through the Employee Assistance program).
Transportation – Interns are responsible for providing their own transportation for all educational activities, including rotation placements, which may be throughout Central Ohio. Interns are also responsible for securing their own personal auto liability insurance. MCCN is not liable for any accident or injury that occurs during travel required for college-related activities.
Upon admission to the program interns will receive an Intern Handbook with specific information regarding policies and procedures for the program. This content is reviewed during orientation week.
