Masters Program

What programs of study do you offer in the Master of Science program?

We offer several tracks towards earning a master’s degree here at the college. They include:

  • Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner – 48 cr. hrs.
  • Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – 39 cr. hrs.
  • Family Nurse Practitioner – 48 cr. hrs.
  • Nursing Administration – 34 cr. hrs.
  • Nursing Education – 38 cr. hrs.

Do all programs of study require clinical experience?

Yes, each one of our master’s tracks requires a specific number of hours spent in the clinical setting. The number of hours required for each track is:

  • Nurse Practitioner – 650 hrs.
  • Adult Health/CNS – 500 hrs.
  • Nursing Administration – 150 hrs.
  • Nursing Education – 250 hrs.

When can I apply?

For our two nurse practitioner tracks (Adult Gero/Acute Care & Family) applications will be accepted starting each September (day after Labor Day) until April 30th.

For all other master’s tracks, you have up to 6 weeks prior to the start of a semester to apply:

What are the admission requirements?

Admission Criteria

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program; accreditation by either NLNAC or CCNE
  • A cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA)of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the baccalaureate nursing program (2.75-2.99 considered in non-matriculated status)
  • PREREQUISITES: Undergraduate Statistics and Research courses with a letter grade of “C” or better in both
  • Current unrestricted Ohio RN license or eligibility for Ohio RN licensure
  • Two Letters of Reference (from individuals such as: work supervisors, professional colleagues, and former faculty members)
  • Transcripts – All college transcripts, both graduate and undergraduate, must be mailed directly to Mount Carmel College of Nursing Master of Science Program
  • One page, typed statement of purpose written by the applicant that outlines the applicant's goals and objectives for the pursuit of graduate studies
  • Current résumé or curriculum vitae
  • One year of recent clinical experience is recommended
  • Face to face or phone interview for qualified applicants (at discretion of Graduate Faculty)
  • A minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL for International students
  • Submission of all requirements of the application process

Who all is required to submit TOEFL scores?

TOEFL scores must be submitted by international students whose native language is not English.

I have taken ESL classes. Will you accept those instead?

No. You must take the TOEFL.

I have lived in the U.S. for several years now and do speak English. Do I still have to take the TOEFL?

This is at the discretion of the Director of Admissions. Please contact the Admissions Office if this is the case.

What all do I need to submit as part of the application process?

When you apply, be sure to submit all of the following materials:

  • Application
  • Application fee ($30.00)
  • Official transcript from all post-secondary institutions attended. All college transcripts, both graduate and undergraduate, must be mailed directly to Mount Carmel College of Nursing Masters of Science Program
  • Current resume or curriculum vitae
  • One page, typed statement of purpose written by the applicant that outlines the applicant's goals and objectives for the pursuit of graduate studies

Is there anything else I will need to submit?

Yes. When accepted you will need to submit:

  • Proof of Professional liability insurance
  • Self-reporting health history form that was sent with your letter of acceptance
  • Copy of current CPR card
  • Copy of current TB skin test results

What CPR certifications will you accept?

The college will accept the following CPR certifications from both the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross:

American Heart Association

  1. BLS for the Health Care Provider
  2. Instructor/Trainer/Faculty

American Red Cross

  1. CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  2. Instructor/Trainer/Faculty

Must my CPR certification and TB skin test results be current?

Yes. CPR and TB skin test results must be current through the end of any semester of enrollment.

What is the cost per credit hour for graduate level courses?

The cost per credit hour for all classes part of any of our master’s level program is $402.00.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, federal loans and grant programs are available to students. Please be sure to complete your FAFSA and have it sent to Mount Carmel in order to determine what you are eligible for. Mount Carmel’s code for the FAFSA is 030719. Also, a limited number of scholarships are available.

A tuition discount program is available for qualified employees of the Mount Carmel Health System. Please contact the Office of Business Affairs to learn more about your eligibility.

How often are students admitted?

Students are admitted in the fall, spring, and summer semester for the Adult Health/CNS, Nursing Administration and Education tracks.

Those students who are interested in either our Family or Adult Gero/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner tracks are only admitted once a year in the fall.

How long does it take to get a Master of Science degree?

Our nurse practitioner tracks can be completed in five (5) semesters if attending full-time or in seven (7) semesters if attending on a part-time basis.

All other master’s tracks take 7-8 semesters.

You must complete your specific program within 5 years of admission.

Are any courses available online?

Yes. There are three (3) core courses which can be taken online for any of the master’s tracks.

Furthermore, if you select the Nursing Education track, you may take 3 additional courses online.

Online courses offer no face time with an instructor. They are solely taught in the virtual setting.

Are there any other graduation requirements besides the required courses?

Yes. Students must complete ten (10) hours of professional service.

In addition, students must complete and have approved a scholarly manuscript worthy of publication. Or satisfactory completion of a graduate research assistant program.

Can you define “professional service”?

Professional service is service that requires the application of one’s skills as an RN to meet identified community needs of vulnerable and at risk populations in accordance with the College’s mission and Catholic identity.

How long must the scholarly manuscript be and who approves it?

One must follow the guidelines on length given by the journal they intend to submit the manuscript to.

Final approval of the manuscript is given by the manuscript advisor and an assigned second reader.

If I already have a master’s degree, can I earn a Certificate in any of your Masters programs?

Yes you can. The type of certificates available and the number of credit hours required in order to earn it include:

  • Adult Gero/Acute – 27 cr. hrs.†
  • Family Nurse Practitioner – 26 cr. hrs.*
  • Nursing Education – 12 cr. hrs.

† Must already have a NP certification in Family or Adult NP

* If you have not previously taken courses work in Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Physiology/Pathophysiology and Advanced Health Assessment you will be required to complete 9 hrs. of direct care core courses in order to receive the Family Nurse Practitioner certificate.
