1. How do I know if nursing is for me?

Nursing is a profession that combines the art of caring and compassion with science and health related technologies. Successful nursing students need good study habits, excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, confidence, determination, and an eagerness to learn. Nurses today have flexibility in their working schedules and more options than ever before about what kind of work they do, where they do it, and when they work. A nursing career is filled with endless personal and professional rewards.

2. What are your admissions requirements?

For H.S., the GPA requirement is 3.0 or higher. For college transfers it is 2.8 or higher.

The following H.S. coursework must be completed with a grade of C or higher:
  • 4 units of English
  • 2 units of a Foreign Language (sign language is accepted)
  • 3 units of Social Sciences (e.g. History, Geography, Government, etc.)
  • 3 units of College Prep Math (e.g. Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry)
  • 3 units of Science (must have 1 unit of Biology and 1 unit of Chemistry)
  • 1 unit of a Visual or Performing Art (e.g. Art, Band, Choir, etc.)
If these are not met in H.S. the equivalent must be taken at the college
level.

3. What are your admission requirements for transfer students?

Transfers must meet our general admission requirements above and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Science course(s) will not transfer if over 5 years old. You can opt to test out though.

4. What are your admission requirements for the Advanced Placement Program?

Applicants must meet the general admissions requirements listed above plus the following:
  • Must have all MCCN freshman curriculum completed and non-nursing sophomore curriculum complete by May 1st
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Science courses will not transfer if taken more than 5 years ago, unless the applicant has an earned degree and works in the "science field." You can't opt to test out of science classes if your science credits were earned over 5 years ago.
5. Would you please explain the Second Degree Accelerated program?

The Program starts once a year in January. Applications are accepted beginning March 1 through June 30. Admissions requirements to get into the programs are:
  • You must have a baccalaureate or higher degree in a field other than nursing
  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (no exceptions)
  • Taken the TOEFL if English is not your NATIVE language
  • A face-to-face interview or telephone interview if you reside out of the state
Prerequisites (must be completed prior to beginning the program not prior to applying) include:
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II *
  • Microbiology *
  • Organic Biochemistry*
  • Human Nutrition *
  • Statistics
  • Cultural Anthropology or Comparative Religion
  • English Composition
  • General Psychology
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • 10 Semester hours of Humanities/Social Science electives
* Science classes must be competed within 5 years of enrollment

6. Are you required to take the ACT or SAT?

The ACT/SAT is required unless you have been out of H.S. for 5 or more years and/or have 30 or more credits of college coursework. We recommend that a student earn a 20 or better on the ACT or 950 or better on the SAT.

7. I am an international student who wishes to attend Mount Carmel College of Nursing. Will the college accept my previous educational course work?

If you are a prospective student with international credit, Mount Carmel College of Nursing requires that you have academic credentials from countries outside of the U.S. evaluated by World Education Services.

8. What is the TOEFL?

When English is not the student's NATIVE language, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. A score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL is required for admission. The MCCN testing code is 1502.

9. I am a non-immigrant international student in the United States. Am I eligible to apply?

Mount Carmel College of Nursing is not an I-20 granting institution. We can accept international students only if they are Permanent Residents or do not require I-20 documentation.

10. What is the application process?

Once an applicant applies, he/she will be notified by mail if any portion of materials to complete the application process is missing. Once all materials of the application are received the applicant will receive written notification that the materials are complete. The completed materials will be forwarded to the admissions committee. The applicant will be notified in writing in early March of the committee's decision.

Items necessary to have your application complete include:
  • Application
  • $30.00 (non-refundable) Application Fee
  • Official ACT or SAT scores
  • Official H.S. transcripts
  • Official College transcripts (if a college transfer or applying for Advanced Placement or the Second Degree Accelerated Program)
  • Essay
  • Activities/Interest Resume
  • TOEFL test score (if applicable)
  • WES evaluation (if applicable)
All applicants must submit an official H.S. transcript regardless of degrees earned or how long they have been out of school.

11. When do you begin accepting application?

We begin to accept applications for the Fall and Winter Semester on September 1st for our traditional four year program. We begin to accept applications for Advanced Placement on September 1st as well. For Second Degree Accelerated, we begin to take applications on March 1st.

12. What is the application deadline?

The application deadline is April 1 for the Fall Semester and you will be notified in writing of our decision in early May. The application deadline for Winter Semester is November 1 with decision notification in early December. The application deadline for Advanced Placement is February 1. Applicants applying for Advanced Placement will be notified in writing of our decision in early March.

13. Can I schedule an appointment to meet with an admissions counselor?

We encourage you to attend one of our upcoming Open House sessions to get the information you will need about Mount Carmel College of Nursing programs and starting the admissions process. There is time at the end of the Open House sessions to answer individual questions. If you live out of town or have specific questions or issues, you are welcome to schedule an appointment with one of our counselors.

14. Will there be an orientation for students accepted to the program?

There will be an orientation in the summer for students accepted into the college. Attendance at orientation is mandatory in order to start the program in the fall.

15. What is the length of the programs?

Our traditional BSN program is a four (4) year program. Our Advanced Placement Program includes a summer session and two (2) academic years thereafter. Our Second Degree Accelerated program lasts 13 months.

16. When do classes meet?

Class, lab and clinical times will vary depending on clinical and lab availability.

17. Will I have classes in the evening or on weekends?

Students need to maintain flexibility in scheduling. Evening or weekend clinicals and labs could be scheduled.

18. When are the breaks in the year?

There are several breaks and days off during the academic year. Students will have a Fall Break in October, a Winter Break in March, and a Summer Break in May. Students will have time off for the holidays including: Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, and Memorial Day. Students taking Summer classes will have off Independence Day.

19. Will I need a computer in order to complete the program?

A computer with the following specifications is strongly recommended:
  • Personal high speed internet connection
  • Web browser software (minimum Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 8.0)
  • Windows 98 operating system or higher (Windows XP recommended)
  • Virus-checking software
  • Microsoft Word 97 or higher
  • 128 MB RAM
  • Printer
  • Free Download Software (Adobe Acrobat Reader, Quicktime Digital Media Player, RealPlayer Digital Media Player, Macromedia Shockwave Player, PowerPoint Viewer)

20. Who teaches the courses and where?

Mount Carmel College of Nursing faculty teach all theory courses. Clinical experiences are planned for one of the three Columbus hospitals in the Mount Carmel Health System or local healthcare facilities. Clinical activities have oversight by College faculty, sometimes with involvement of nurse preceptors.

21. What type of equipment will I need to purchase?

Students will need to purchase a lab coat, student uniform, College of Nursing uniform patch, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, calipers, penlight and wrist watch. Information regarding where to purchase these items will be provided to students after admission to the program.

22. Are there other program requirements in addition to the courses?

All students must complete 20 clock hours of community service (outside of class hours) in order to meet graduation requirements.

23. How many credit hours are required to graduate?

Students in our traditional four (4) year BSN program and Advanced Placement Program must earn 133 credit hours to graduate. Those students in our Second Degree Accelerated program must earn 129 semester hours to graduate.

24. What degree will I earn?

Upon completion of our undergraduate programs, Mount Carmel College of Nursing will confer the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

25. When I graduate am I then a Registered Nurse (RN)?

No. Graduates must pass the licensing exam to become an RN. Oversight for this exam is through the Ohio Board of Nursing. We will provide graduates with details about scheduling the NCLEX-RN exam.

26. Can I work while enrolled in the programs?

Those students enrolled in our traditional four (4) year and Advanced Placement program are welcome to work should they choose. Employment opportunities are available within the college as well as the Mount Carmel Health System.

Students in the Second Degree Accelerated Program are strongly advised NOT to work, given the rigor associated with completing degree requirements. Involvement at this accelerated pace (40hrs/week) will lead to a time commitment equivalent to full-time employment.
