As we near the halfway mark of this academic year, we look back over 2016 with pride in our past and confidence in our future.
We congratulate and honor our founders, the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who celebrated two anniversaries this year: the 175th anniversary of the founding of their order and the 130th anniversary of their having arrived in Columbus in 1886 to administer the then new hospital, Mount Carmel West.
We’re excited about our future students whom we are serving through creation of a new, fresh marketing tagline and a re-launch of the College website, www.mccn.edu.
“When Life is Your Life’s Calling,” which acknowledges that nursing is more than just a job; nursing truly is a calling. You can read more about our new tagline that further reinforces our rich Catholic heritage in the current issue, the Lamp.
We’re also energized about the nursing profession’s increased emphasis on the importance of the Bachelor Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Increasingly, hospitals are taking action to implement the Institute of Medicine’s 2010 recommendation that 80 percent of the nursing workforce have a BSN by the year 2020, as reported in “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” MCCN’s Online RN-BSN Program is very strong – in 2016 we conferred 91 BSN degrees on experienced RNs who completed our BSN-RN program – this is a tremendous increase over the eight students who graduated from this program in 2001.
We’re excited that our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree is now in its second year. The DNP enables Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to become innovative leaders in implementing evidence-based, cost-effective and collaborative healthcare solutions while positively impacting outcomes for patient populations at the complex systems level.
As we enter the holiday season be assured that we are hard at work, pressing forward with planning a continued bright future for MCCN.
