"A Sentinel Event Alert issued today by the The Joint Commission warns against the effects of an extended work day and cumulative days of extended work hours. It urges all health care organizations to take steps to reduce fatigue-related risks. Gayle O'Brien, Mount Carmel vice president of quality and safety, tells Misti Crane the many initiatives underway to promote a culture of quality and safety, including Associate-friendly policies (for example, mandatory overtime is not required) and the recent creation of "Float Teams" to provide support at Mount Carmel's four hospitals. Also mentioned but not included:
- Senior clinical leader certification as "Patient Safety Leaders" by Duke University
- Expanding the annual Culture of Safety survey by including questions on resilience, and the annual Associate Engagement Survey which aspires to create a top-decile workplace
