Recognitions and Awards

Twelve nursing faculty and staff members received the 2015 Mount Carmel Excellence in Nursing Awards. Colleagues recognized these individuals for outstanding leadership in advancing nursing education. They were honored at the Annual Excellence in Nursing Celebration and Dinner on September 16, 2015, at the Villa Milano restaurant in Westerville, Ohio. Awardees included:

The MCCN RN-to-BSN program was named as one of the top online RN-BSN programs in the United States by Best Colleges.com.

Ms. Miriam Abbott was recognized for her work with “So We All Thrive,” by the Columbus local schools and community, as an Outstanding Woman Leader in the 26th Annual Women's “Herstory” Celebration, March 2016.

Dr. Kim Campbell received her PhD in Education with specialization in Training and Performance from Capella University (2015, September). Title of dissertation was Diversity in Healthcare: Career Advancement Strategies for Minorities Seeking C-Suite Leadership Roles.

Ms. Colleen Cipriani received the Community Advocate Award from Franklin Children's Services for her contributions in coordinating Mount Carmel College of Nursing and the part it plays in the annual “FamJam.” The FamJam, a family enrichment festival, is the result of a joint collaboration between the city and county offices and made possible through donations from individuals and corporations.

Dr. Scott Dolan received his PhD in Nursing during the summer 2015. Title of dissertation was How Are Minority Baccalaureate Degree Student Nurses’ Experiences Affected in Learning through a Virtual Community?

Ms. Kathy Espy, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Recognition and Induction into “Who’s Who in Black Columbus,” on October 27, 2015.

Dr. Katheryn Fernandez: was instrumental in establishing an Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for undergraduate students at Mount Carmel College of Nursing (April, 2016).

Ms. Robin Hutchinson-Bell and the College Relations and Marketing Team: Received two Gold Awards for The Lamp magazine, 2015 Winter/Spring issue – two separate competitions that judge 2015 produced marketing communications materials. The first award this year was received from the Higher Education Marketing: Annual Educational Advertising Awards; the second award was received from the Annual Collegiate Advertising Awards competition.

Also received: the Gold award for The Lamp and a Silver award for recruitment materials from the Healthcare Marketing Report – National Newspaper of Healthcare Marketing. Team members include Jan Burkey and Alyssa Fry from the Mount Carmel Health System Foundation, Joanna Worthington from College Relations, Debbie Boggs and Phylis Crook from Alumni Relations, designer Sheila Cooney, writer Jaron Terry, and photographer Chris Steel.

Dr. Jeri Milstead (Member, Board of Trustees and an MCCN Alumni) was honored twice in one night, on October 7, 2015. She received The Mildred E. Newton Distinguished Educator Award from the Ohio State University College of Nursing Alumni Society and was inducted into the Ohio Nurses Association Cornelius Leadership Congress, ONA's "most prestigious" award.

Ms. Shivani Patel is a nurse practitioner student at the Ohio State University and teaches in the MCCN NURS 407 Caring Health Practices for the Child and Family course. Ms. Patel received the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) 2016 Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Student of the Year Award on April 29, 2016, at the NAPNAP conference held in Newark, Ohio.

Mr. Stevo Roksandic:

  • Participated as panelist at The Tech Forum at this year's Midwest Chapter Meeting discussing and sharing his experiences with MCHS Library Services technology innovations and Education on Demand (‘Library-On-Demand’ services), October 2015.
  • Was appointed to EBSCO Health’s Medical Advisory Board. The Board is comprised of key opinion leaders in the medical industry who provide critical feedback and guidance on a number of initiatives including new product development, product features and direction on how EBSCO Health can meet the needs of the medical librarian community. The board has been in place for several years, and includes key medical librarians throughout North America.

Ms. Peggy Shaw received the Ohio League for Nursing “Innovation in Nursing” award for her work with students in simulation of the death and dying process, at the Education Summit, Columbus, Ohio, April 8, 2016.

Ms. Deidre Smith has been selected as a member of the advisory board for the Salvation Army of Fairfield County.

Dr. Tara Spalla:

  • Conducted a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) site visit on September 30 – October 2, 2015.
  • Member of the Advisory Committee to the Physicians Leadership Academy (PLA) of the Columbus Medical Association Foundation (since February 2013). Hired as an executive coach for Fellows of the PJA beginning Fall 2014. Recently submitted application to the MCHS Continuing Medical Education (CME) committee to receive CME credit for the program through MCHS; approved.

Dr. Darrell Spurlock:

  • Received the honor of becoming a Fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education, National League for Nursing, October 2, 2015, at the annual NLN Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Appointed to the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation Program Review Committee, effective January 1, 2016.

Extensive Community Contributions

Ms. Catie Mauer-Baack & Dr. Kathy Fernandez were awarded a Mount Carmel Foundation grant worth $2000 to initiate a project called Music and Memory in collaboration with the Isabelle Ridgway Post-Acute Care Center. The project trains health care professionals to establish personalized music playlists delivered through iPods and other digital devices. Next, musical favorites are used to elicit deep memories in patients with dementia and enhance communication and socialization. Once launched the project will be expanded for building an interprofessional educational experience with departments in the MCHS system.

Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) for the purpose of developing model best practices for preventing and responding to sexual assault on college campuses; the grant will cover expenses for developing training modules and courses for educating faculty, staff, and students about Title IX sexual assault prevention and intervention. Funding amount: $7500.

Kilanowski, J. F. (2015). Safety in the agricultural work camp comic book developed and evaluated for Latino MSAW families. Funded by the Central State Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. Funding amount: $20,000.
