Noah E. Hilty Scholarship

The scholarship was given in honor and memory of Reverend Noah E. Hilty (1896-1993). Reverend Hilty was a minister, farmer, and master bricklayer. His decision to serve as minister was based on selection by "lot." The church congregation recommended four men for the position of minister, their names were written on separate pieces of paper, and placed inside four hymnals. The hymnals were placed at the front of the church during a Sunday morning service. Reverend Hilty was ordained into the ministry on August 10, 1919, because he selected the hymnal with his name in it. He was a full-time minister for 50 years. He graduated from the eighth grade, and took several religious courses. Reverend Hilty valued the pursuit of an education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This scholarship is given in gratitude and appreciation for his life. Sixteen (16) $1,000 scholarships

“Be Quick, But Don’t Hurry” Scholarship

John Wooden, the legendary UCLA Basketball Coach, is considered by most experts to be one of the best coach’s in the history of basketball. His basketball teams won 10 National Championships in 12 years from 1964-1975. One of his most favorite sayings was "Be quick, but don't hurry" which he applied to both basketball and life. Being quick meant no wasted motion and no wasted time. He once said: "If you hurry, you're more likely to make mistakes; but if you're not quick, you won't get things done." Coach Wooden wanted his players to "never [be] out of control" while living their fast-paced lives. The name of this scholarship reminds MCCN nursing students they must be quick, but not hurry while caring for their patients. Five (5) $1,000 scholarships
