MCCN’s Newest Graduates Realize Dreams of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in Just 13 Months

Columbus, Ohio…Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) recently held a completion ceremony for the 62 members of the third class to complete the College’s innovative Second Degree Accelerated Program (SDAP), which offers the nursing education excellence MCCN is known for in an accelerated 13-month program.

This MCCN program is for qualified individuals who have completed a baccalaureate degree or higher with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, meet the admission criteria for prerequisite courses, and now want to pursue a career in nursing. The SDAP is designed for those can enroll full-time – 40 hours per week/five days per week.

“There are many people – men and women alike – who have dreamed of an exciting, rewarding career in nursing, but have been held back from following their dream because they can’t take several years to make a career change,” says Barbara Barta, RN, Assistant Dean, Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN). “That’s why we offer the MCCN Second Degree Accelerated Program. In just over a year, an individual can be a professional nurse, doing the kind of work they always knew they were meant to do,” she adds.

According to Ann Schiele, PhD, RN, President and Dean of the more than 100-year-old educational institution, MCCN developed this accelerated course in response to the nursing shortage. “The American Association of Colleges of Nursing estimates that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012 to care for America’s aging population,” Schiele says. “Mount Carmel College of Nursing wanted to be proactive in helping to meet this need, as we also help qualified individuals gain entry into one of the fastest-growing, highest-opportunity career fields available today.”

As MCCN celebrates these newest nursing professionals, the 72 members of the College’s fourth SDAP class are more than one month into their 13-month odyssey to the BSN. Those interested in information about MCCN’s fifth SDAP class, set to begin in January 2011 and end in January 2012, are invited to visit www.mccn.edu or call 614-234-5800.
