What inspired you to become a nurse?

I was inspired to be a nurse through my best friend who is a MCCN alumna. Becoming a nurse transformed her life, not just academically, but turned her into such a professional and strong person. I truly admire her! Before committing to going back to college, I felt uninspired and 'stuck'. I had only completed about a year and a half of college prior. The idea of becoming a nurse was challenging, and I felt I needed to be challenged. I have always had a strong sense of empathy and compassion since I was a little girl, and with nursing, I am able to use that to help others. The further I get into my nursing career, the more I love it. I truly could not imagine doing anything else other than nursing!

What is the best thing about Mount Carmel College of Nursing?

The best thing about Mount Carmel College of Nursing is the people I have met. I have made some wonderful friendships that I know will last after I leave college. It is so important to me to find people to connect with. Everyone, regardless of where they come from, has been so kind to me. I also have learned so much from my professors in both nursing and non-nursing courses.

What are your goals for your nursing career?

My goal is just to keep trying my hardest even with odds against me. Although it sounds corny, being the best I can be is something I strive for. I want to be the best nurse, friend, wife, and person for myself.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Advice I would give to my younger self is don’t quit when things get difficult. I had ended my first college experience short because I was lacking motivation and interest in it. Although I am still young now, if I continued, I could be done with college by now. So do not quit! Keep going!

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in nursing?

Do not compare yourself to others, and it is a privilege to be able to learn! It is difficult to not compare yourself to others, but it is truly the thief of joy! I struggle tremendously with comparing myself to my peers at times, but the truth is we all have our disadvantages and advantages. Some have children, families, jobs, and others don't. All these external factors will impact you in nursing school. It’s a privilege to be able to study, but how much you can study depends on whether you have to work and whether you can maintain a social life. Understand this when you compare yourself to your peers and know that we are all trying our best with the cards we were dealt.
