Quick Tips to Help Ensure a Healthy 2016

We’ve all read the advice regarding diet, exercise and stress relief to achieve and maintain optimum health. But how do you put these tips into a framework you can use for your wellness goals? We asked Student Health Nurse Laura Lawrence, BSN, RN, and Student Counselor William Bumgardner, LPCC, LICDC-CS, for quick tips to ensure a physically and mentally healthy 2016.

Student Health Nurse Laura Lawrence:

“The New Year is a great time to start a new health goal. My suggestion is to have a written plan with realistic short-term and long-term goals. Be realistic and read your goals daily! It is also good to have a ‘health partner’ and start your health journey together to hold each other accountable in getting healthy.”

Student Counselor William Bumgardner:

  • Pay attention to what your mind and body are telling you.
    • If you are tired, rest (sleep at least seven hours).
    • If you need a mental break, take it.
    • If you are hungry, eat something healthy.
  • Find ways to find a healthy balance and some consistency.
  • Get some exercise.
  • Cut down on television and video games. They don't allow your mind to rest and it makes assimilation of new information more difficult.
  • Ask for help from instructors, other students or a counselor. To learn more, students can come and talk to me (schedule an appointment at 614-234-5900).
