i-Innovate FAQ

i-Innovate is a campus-wide initiative enabling MCCN to lead transformation in education through innovation to foster digital competency and provide equal technological opportunities to all MCCN students. With this initiative, we will enhance the technology in our classrooms and put common technology into students’ hands to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

MCCN is collaborating with Apple on this student success initiative so faculty members, staff and students have access to a new Apple iPad, Apple Pencil, smart keyboard, a protective case and AppleCare+.

MCCN is committed to preparing students academically and professionally as competent and compassionate nurse leaders both in and out of the classroom, which is why this is more than just students and faculty receiving an iPad. This student success initiative is also a significant investment in our classrooms and common spaces, including the installation of Apple TVs and improved collaboration spaces across campus

Faculty and staff was issued the iPad Equipment Package in October 2020 and began training to learn how they can leverage these digital tools for successful educational strategies.

In January 2021, the trial first group of students were issued their iPad Equipment Package. By August 2021, all MCCN students will have access to this great technology.

  • Apple iPad
  • Apple Pencil
  • Smart Keyboard
  • Protective Case
  • AppleCare+

(What is the difference between an MCCN iPad and one bought from a store?)

Every MCCN iPad is preloaded with special apps that faculty and students can use to augment professional practice and transform the workforce. If the student chooses to purchase their iPad by the end of their career at MCCN, they can take it into practice with them and use it as a tool when working directly with patients. Additional benefits include:

  • Improved collaboration between faculty members and students
  • Personalized learning
  • Greater connectivity and flexibility
  • Better preparation to succeed in our progressively digital world

All students will be able to purchase their devices prior to the start of their academic year in August 2021.

Yes. Access device training here.

Students will still need to purchase their textbooks for class, but in many classes, there will be an option to select the printed textbook or an e-book.

All students must use an MCCN iPad to ensure equal learning opportunities and success.

The device you receive from MCCN is different than any of your personally owned devices. While it has many of the same freedoms, the MCCN iPad you will receive includes a suite of apps made available to you free of charge as an MCCN students, as well as additional security.

Use of iPads in the classroom will vary depending on the class. MCCN is investing significant resources to train faculty on how to incorporate iPads into their teaching. Examples may include the following:

  • Provide feedback to students in multiple formats
  • Adding photography and video to class assignments
  • Connecting with experts via Google Hangouts or WebEx
  • Creating course-specific content which eliminates the need for expensive textbooks
  • Testing with exam software run through iPad

Students will also be able to use their iPad to integrate technology into the delivery of safe, effective patient care during clinical. Use of iPad at clinical will enable students to have clinical resources, such as material from class, that is easily accessible. Students will also utilize the iPad during skills lab and simulation.

The iPad will be college property while you are attending MCCN. When you graduate from the MCCN four year BSN program, management will be removed and ownership of the device will transfer to you. If you graduate from a shorter program at MCCN, you have the option to buy out your device. If you choose to do this, management will be removed and ownership of the device will transfer to you.

Student Users: If you leave MCCN (through graduation, transfer, withdraw, leave of absence, or involuntary withdraw), you will be required to return the iPad Equipment Package to MCCN within 10 days of your departure from the College. Failure to return any or all equipment may result in it being remotely reset to the original configuration or disabled and rendered nonfunctional. Student users will be charged a full replacement cost for the device and all accessories. The cost will be applied to your student account from the Business Office.

Faculty and Staff Users: If you leave MCCN (through reassignment within the health system, resignation, retirement, termination, or furlough), you will be required to return the iPad Equipment Package to MCCN within 10 days of your departure from the College. Failure to return any or all equipment may result in it being remotely reset to the original configuration or disabled and rendered nonfunctional. Full replacement costs may be taken from your final pay check and/or other action may be taken through Colleague Relations.

As outlined in the MCCN iPad Agreement and Policy, users will not attempt to sell, give away, or otherwise attempt to transfer ownership of the device or related accessories (including chargers, cables, and software) in any way. Users are responsible for any third-party usage of the equipment.

Yes, you will have access to change setting on your devices to help it best fit you.

MCCN will manage all devices with a mobile device management system called Jamf, which will require a strong passcode, but will allow you to customize most settings.

MCCN will preload special apps you will use in your classes and sometime automatically install or require the download of new apps, operating systems and app updates, but you will be able to add additional apps from the Apple App Store.

Prohibited actions include trying to jailbreak or otherwise remove the mobile device management system on the device or using the device for illegal activities. You can find the complete guidelines in our MCCN iPad Agreement and Policy.

Apple makes it easy for users to see what Apple can see and use on your iPad. They believe privacy is very important and right of the user. That being said, MCCN does use a mobile device management system that will alert us if you do something illegal, try to jailbreak your device, or download an app not found in the official Apple App Store. If we are alerted to these activities, we will notify you and reset or “brick” your device.

MCCN iPad users are responsible for repairs or replacement of equipment in the event of damage or loss. Repairs to the device can only be made at an authorized Apple retailer or Apple Store. Third-party repairs, are not authorized as appropriate repairs. The user will be responsible for paying the cost of the lost or stolen iPad and/or equipment.

In the event of lost or stolen devices, the user must contact (need a contact) immediately. If you believe your device has been stolen, a theft report must be filed with MCCN Safety and Security at 614.896.1489.

The iPad should be locked with a passcode and the “Find My iPad” services enabled via iCloud. This will make sure that if the iPad is taken, no one can access a student or faculty member’s private information, and will also ensure a greater chance of locating and retrieving the iPad. MCCN’s remote management system will also allow the College to disable the device if it is lost or stolen, thereby making it useless.

MCCN will preload apps on the iPad. Any additional apps that students add to their iPad will be up to them to pay for.

There are many ways to configure your iPad to meet your needs. MCCN Student Accessibility Services are available to you and can be reached at accessibility@mccn.edu.

No, there is no data plan included with the MCCN iPad. The devices are Wi-Fi enabled.

MCCN will maintain a stock of loaner devices. These will be available for students whose devices are under repair. Students must sign off on loaner devices and accept responsibility for any loaner equipment that is in their possession and return it when their device is returned.

Users are responsible for repairs or replacement of equipment in the event of damage or loss. Repairs to the device can only be made at an authorized Apple retailer or Apple Store. There is a fee associated with fixing an iPad, even with Apple Care+ to fix an iPad. It is up to the user to pay this fee.

MCCN students will be charged $170 each semester toward the Apple iPad Equipment Package.

When you graduate from the MCCN four year BSN program, management will be removed and ownership of the device will transfer to you.

If you graduate from a shorter program at MCCN, you have the option to buy out your device. If you choose to do this, management will be removed and ownership of the device will transfer to you.
