Drive Through

MCCN’s First Ever Drive-Thru Welcome

On Saturday, August 22, more than 70 students attended the first ever MCCN Drive-Thru Welcome, where they were personally welcomed at a healthy distance by faculty, staff and current students (in face covers – of course!). The new Nightingales received welcome packets, which included a Mount Carmel College of Nursing t-shirt, a planner, and some other items donated by our generous Mount Carmel Alumni Association. They also received MCCN face masks!

Boot Camp

Remediation Skills Bootcamp

A great team of faculty along with Mitch Jospeph-Kemplin, director of Compliance & Safety, were assembled to design a Bootcamp for nursing skills, competency, education and remediation, for the return of their clinical experience. The gym was turned into a skills lab, now known as the Skillsnasium. In our efforts to provide a safe return to the College, we put safety measures in place for our students, faculty and staff. All were required to wear a mask and complete a COVID-19 self-screening check before coming to the College. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) were available during bootcamp along with positioning the skills stations within a safe distance, as the students rotated through each station. The students’ clinical instructors and faculty did a great job throughout the week. The students were excited to be back and to have the opportunity to review their skills. The Bootcamp was a great success because of the hard work of everyone involved. The best part of Bootcamp was seeing the students’ excitement, smiles, and hands-on skills experience at the bedside.

Skills that were used during Bootcamp:

  • Bed 1: Concept of Fundamental Theory
  • Bed 2: Concept of Mobility and Safety
  • Bed 3: Concept of Safe Medication Administration and Intravenous Administration
  • Bed 4: Concept of Sterility Theory
  • Bed 5: Lounge – Posters and equipment for review

Message from the President & Academic Dean

Kathleen Williamson

I hope your year is getting off to a great start!

It was a pleasure to welcome our freshman in the Drive Thru Welcome event held just prior to the start of our new academic year. Each day, we find new ways to connect and collaborate and keep our community strong, despite the environment that COVID-19 has created. We’ll continue to learn and grow as we go and I commend each and every one of you for your tenacity and resilience as you pursue your education. I could not be prouder of how you and our faculty and staff have risen to these significant challenges.

To continue creating the “new” normal, we have an updated Restart Guide. Special thanks goes to Mitch Joseph-Kemplin, our directory of compliance and safety, who worked diligently with other staff members to create this important plan.

Technology is playing a much bigger role in our learning experience and I’m sure that trend will continue well after the pandemic is over. Our MCCN Nightingale Faculty Fellows program was created as a catalyst to drive the adoption of new and emerging technology and impact our faculty’s pedagogy and student success. They will assist in continuing our legacy of academic excellence in the face of rapidly changing times. We have five faculty members who have been selected to serve in this new role. They are:

  • Miriam Abbot, MA
  • Lindsay Luther, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, EBP-C
  • Missy Mohler, MS, RN
  • Tracey Riley, PhD, APRN-CNS, CNE
  • Joy Vorhees, BS, DVM

Each of these faculty fellows brings a unique skill set, great enthusiasm and a servant leader mindset to this new role. They will work with their peers to identify challenges and explore how technology and evidence-based teaching strategies can help overcome them. By combining ideas, evidence, and innovative spirit with expertise in academic thought, we will work collaboratively to apply emerging technologies for teaching and learning; continuing our legacy of academic excellence in the face of rapidly changing times. We’re excited about this new program and the change and growth it will bring to our campus.

To learn more about this program and this year’s fellows, view the Morning Update or email your questions to facultyfellows@mccn.edu.

I’m looking forward to a great semester and hope you are as well.

Sincerely,

kathleen-williamson

It's Okay'

National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month (#SMP20) and National Suicide Prevention Week is September 6 - 12, 2020. The American Association of Suicidology believes we need to focus on suicide prevention every day, of every year (#AAS365). And we can do this by continuously spreading awareness, advocating for research funding, developing innovative and effective treatment tools, being kind, and helping to educate others on things like resources and warning signs. It's time to get involved, but not just this week and not just this month. It's time to make #AAS365 a priority. And it's time to make our efforts count.

Please view the short video, “It’s ok to not be ok” about suicide awareness.

Motivational Quotes From FYEX 110 at MCCN-Lancaster

As part of their first assignment in FYEX 110, freshmen in Natalie Herdman’s class were asked to provide a quotation that was meaningful and inspirational to them. Below are a few:

“You're going to pass something down no matter what you do or if you do nothing. Even if you let yourself go fallow, the weeds will grow and the brambles. Something will grow.” (East of Eden, John Steinbeck)

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." (Milton Berle)

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow." (Albert Einstein)

"You are only as pretty as you treat people.” (Anon.)

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb in his skin and walk around in it.” (To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee)

"She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future." (Proverbs 31:25)
